Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced that they are looking to hire a consultancy firm for the Thilafushi Port project.
MPL's announcement reads that they have announced the opportunity for project management consultancy firms to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the Thilafushi Port development project.
As part of the project, a multi-purpose commercial port is to be developed at Thilafushi, which will result in a reduction to the congestion at the Male' Commercial Harbor that will lead to an increase in the ability to embark goods at a national scale.
Requirements in choosing a consultancy firm:
- At least 25 years of experience in project management or Owner's Engineering for large port projects or marine infrastructure projects.
- Completion of at least three of the mentioned projects within the last 10 years.
According to the announcement, EOI's can be submitted until 15th September, 2:00 pm.
Speaking about the relocation project in July, President Muizzu said 80 percent of port operations will be transferred to the new commercial port in Thilafushi, describing the new facility as a modern, fully equipped commercial port.
While a large portion of port services will be transferred to Thilafushi, arrangements will be made for some services to be available at the Industrial Village, said the President.
The government has decided to begin operations at Thilafushi Port on 11th November 2027.
MPL has previously stated that the main purpose of this project in finding a permanent solution to the traffic congestion at the Male' harbor is to expand harbor resources in equal measure to the advancement of Maldives' maritime transportation and the logistics industry, along with expediting the process in embarking and disembarking goods.
In May, Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) was awarded the contract to construct a 100-metre domestic keywall and carry out paving works at a three-hectare area.
Once the project is finished, an international key-wall longer than 1,000 meters, and a domestic terminal that has a 2,000 meter key-wall specifically for vessels that make use of the Male' North Harbor and the South West Harbor will be available for use at the Thilafushi Harbor.
The China Harbor Engineering Company (CHEC) has been awarded the project in establishing the international and domestic key-wall at Thilafushi under the project in moving the Male' Commercial Harbor to the island.
