A man in a position of trust who sexually abused a girl in a southern island was arrested today.

A police media official stated that a case involving allegations of sexual abuse, as well as physical and psychological abuse, against a 13-year-old girl in an island within the Upper South Police Division was reported last Monday.

Protests were also held on the island following a lack of action regarding the matter. Subsequently, a 41-year-old Maldivian male was arrested under suspicion of sexual abuse.

It has been learned that the person arrested for abusing the young teenager is her father.
