Grants have been given to an additional 10 islands to develop nurseries for the government's 5 Million Tree Project.
It is President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's presidential pledge to plant 5 million trees within his 5-year term.
The signing ceremony with the island councils that were given the grants was held yesterday at the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy. Environment Minister Ali Shareef attended the signing as well.
The first 10 islands to receive grants for the development of nurseries is HA. Kelaa, Sh. Milandhoo, N. Kendhikulhudhoo, R. Innamadhoo, B. Maalhos, AA. Mathiveri, M. Mulah, Th. Kinbidhoo, GA. Dhaandhoo and GDh. Thinadhoo.

The islands that were given grants yesterday are HDh. Nolhivaran, K. Himmafushi, ADh. Dhidhdhoo, F. Dharanboodhoo, Dh. Meedhoo, L. Fonadhoo, L. Hithadhoo, GDh. Vaadhoo, Gn. Fuvahmulah and Addu Meedhoo.
The ministry said that the construction of the nurseries will make it easier to grow different types of trees and procure the trees needed for the 5 Million Tree Project.
The government has decided to build 20 nurseries across Maldives.
The ministry stated that an MVR 500,000 grant will be given to each island to build a nursery under the agreement. A total of MVR 5 million will be given to 10 islands.
Nurseries are to be built within seven months from the day the agreement is signed. The ministry also said that the nurseries will serve as the main centers in moving the 5 Million Tree Project forward.
The ministry went on to say that each nursery can grow around 50,000 trees per year, and that this will make it easier to provide the trees required by neighboring islands. The ministry said that necessary training programs are being conducted for nursery staff in order to further strengthen the project.
