The Criminal Court has extended the remand of MDP national council member Ahmed Maimoon Mohamed for five days.

A police spokesperson said Maimoon was arrested under a court order for allegedly causing disorder at a rally on Friday night, obstructing police officers in the execution of their duties and crossing police barricades erected to block the road.

Maimoon, who is also Vice-President of the MDP Youth Wing, was arrested after the opposition party held a series of protests last night.

He was produced before the Criminal Court and remanded in custody for five days.

MDP has launched a series of protests against layoffs at state-owned companies and the government’s decision to increase the amount of foreign currency resorts must exchange through Maldivian banks to 40%.
