Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party's National Council passed a vote last night to appoint the party's former Vice President Mohamed Shifaz to the position of Deputy Chairperson.

30 out of the 34 MPs who attended last night's council meeting voted in favor of appointing Shifaz as the Deputy Chairperson.

Shifaz, who held a senior role in MDP for a long time, left the party due to internal differences of opinion in 2023 to join The Democrats, a political party formed by former President Mohamed Nasheed.

After serving as the Vice President for The Democrats, he rejoined MDP last year.

Nasheed, who played an important role in forming the party, currently holds the position of MDP's Chairperson.

MDP's Deputy Chairperson position was vacated when Ahmed Abdulla resigned on Wednesday.

He resigned to take part in former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid's campaign efforts after Shahid officially announced that he was to run in the party's presidential primary.
