Police and the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) have discussed measures to reduce road accidents in Hulhumale' amid a rise in traffic incidents.
Police said the meeting focused on identifying accident-prone areas and addressing speeding and other factors contributing to road accidents.
The meeting was attended by Head of Police Chief Inspector Ibrahim Haleel, Traffic Police head Chief Inspector Ahmed Haneef and other police officers, as well as HDC planning head Ahmed Shahid and other HDC officials.
Police said the officials shared information on areas where accidents frequently occur and where vehicles are often driven at high speeds. They also discussed immediate measures that could be taken to reduce accidents.
The discussions focused on three main areas of road safety: engineering, enforcement and education.
Measures discussed included:
- Increasing police presence on major roads in Hulhumalé
- Expediting legal action against drivers caught speeding
- Strengthening traffic management around schools and other high-traffic areas
- Improving traffic management at roundabouts and pedestrian crossings
- Installing pedestrian signals at zebra crossings
- Prohibiting parking at road junctions, zebra crossings and on pavements
- Conducting joint awareness programmes for drivers and pedestrians
The meeting follows a serious accident in Hulhumale' Phase 2 on Saturday night in which a child was critically injured in front of Vinares 7.
The child is being treated on a ventilator at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), while the child’s aunt was also injured in the accident.
Police previously said CCTV footage showed a motorcycle travelling along Hithigas Magu hitting the pedestrian as they was crossing the road to get into a car parked near Vinares 7.
