The National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) has opened re-registration for recipients of social security assistance.
The agency said in an announcement yesterday that applicants approved for social security assistance will receive payments for two years.
Those currently on the assistance register whose eligibility was approved up to November 2024 have been asked to reapply through OneGov before 30 November.
NSPA said those who fail to re-register within the deadline will have to apply for assistance again using a new application form.
The assistance programmes covered by the re-registration include:
- Financial assistance for poor single parents caring for children
- Financial assistance for children living in poverty who are being cared for by someone other than their parents
- Financial assistance for food purchases for people living in poverty
Under the regulations, a person can remain on the assistance register for two years. However, NSPA said the register had not been reviewed and allowances had previously been paid to people who were no longer eligible.
The re-registration exercise was opened to address the issue, the agency said.
The move comes after more than MVR10 million was deposited into the bank accounts of more than 700 deceased people during a previous disbursement of NSPA financial assistance.
Speaking to state media, NSPA CEO Aminath Shiruna said monitoring had worsened after the agency’s monitoring section was abolished in 2020.
She said payments had subsequently been made to people whose personal details had not been updated.
