The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said no Maldivians are known to have been affected by the floods that struck the Nepal-China border area yesterday.

The ministry said it was closely monitoring the situation following the floods, which were triggered by the collapse of a glacier in the Himalayas.

Checks conducted through the Maldivian High Commission in India and the Maldives’ honorary consul in Kathmandu found no reports of Maldivians being affected or being present in the area hit by the floods, the ministry said.

The collapse of the glacier sent millions of tonnes of sediment, debris and rocks into valleys and rivers below. Monsoon rains further accelerated the flow of water, causing unusually fast and high-moving floods.

Buildings along roads were buried in mud and debris, according to reports.

More than 270 people have reportedly been killed and more than 1,300 remain missing.
