A 51-year-old woman has died following a suspected gas leak at a house in Male; today, while a 19-year-old woman is receiving treatment in serious condition.

Police said the incident was reported shortly after 10.30am at a house on Dilkusha Goalhi, (Scoop Goalhi).

Two women were taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) after falling ill in the incident. One of them, identified as Zahidha Taufeeq, 51, of RS 6210, Male', was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.

The 19-year-old woman is being treated at ADK Hospital, police said.

The two women were reportedly the only residents of the house, and the younger woman is understood to be the deceased’s daughter.

The exact cause of the incident has not yet been established. Residents in the area reported a strong smell of gas following the incident.
