Hisaan Hussain has resigned from her position as the Vice President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

In the letter written to MDP's Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed, Hisaan said that she resigned from her position due to the resignation of the party's former President Abdulla Shahid, who elected her to the vice president position.

Shahid resigned as MDP's President on 14th July in order to run in MDP's primary as a candidate for the next Presidential Election. Shahid was elected as MDP's President when Nasheed resigned in 2023 and left the party.

Hisaan said that after taking democratic principles into consideration upon the party's president resigning, she said that staying as the party's vice president without a new mandate does not fall in line with the principles of democracy.

The Thulhaadhoo Constituency MP in the 19th Parliament and President of the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) stated in her letter that she resigned because of these reasons.

"Even if I do not hold an official position within the party, I assure the leadership and all MPs that I will always support the growth of the party and serve as a member of the party," Hisaan wrote in her letter.

As opposition MDP's general regulations currently stands, the party's vice president will be elected upon a submission from the party's president to the National Council and with council approval.

While Hisaan resigned from her position, she was seen participating at Shahid's candidacy announcement that was held at Addu City. MDP's Deputy Chairperson Ahmed Abdulla resigned from his position yesterday as well, stating he wanted to devote time to the campaign.
