Ahmed Abdulla, who held the position of Deputy Chairperson of MDP, resigned from his post today.

According to the resignation letter sent to Mohamed Nasheed, the Chairperson of the main opposition party, Ahmed resigned from the position of Deputy Chairperson to participate in the campaign activities of former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid, following Shahid's official announcement that he will compete in the party's presidential primary.

In his resignation letter, Ahmed stated that MDP's President, Vice President, Chairperson, and Deputy Chairperson are individuals who must equally guarantee the rights of all candidates competing for various positions within the party.

Therefore, he also stated that he does not believe it is something that should be done to work for a specific candidate while remaining in those positions.

Shahid announced on the 14th of this month that he will compete in the primary held to determine the candidate MDP will field for the 2028 presidential election. Upon making that announcement, he resigned from the position of party president.

Shahid had also stated that competing in an internal party election while holding a senior position in MDP is not something he accepts.
