Elections Commission (EC) has said that the constitutional right to vote is a form of responsibility that can be used to build the nation's future upon Islamic principles.

The EC released a statement celebrating National Voters' Day, which reads that the main purpose of celebrating this day is to increase the public's participation in democracy, and to establish more trust in voters rights and the election system. The EC also said that it is also meant to inform people regarding the importance of voting, and to provide information about elections and democracy.

"Voting is a right granted to all citizens from the Constitution, and is a major form of responsibility given to build the nations future upon Islamic principles," said the EC.

"So instead of voting for temporary benefits, choosing someone who is religious, trusting towards the nation and a capable person is an individual responsibility of all citizens."

The slogan for National Voters' Day this year is "Voting is a right and a responsibility!".

August 25 is marked as National Voter' Day every year in Maldives, with EC deciding as such in 2015 during the "Democracy Week" event held at HA. Hoarafushi.

EC went on to say that National Voters' Day over the last three years saw it be celebrated colorfully with various activities, and that increasing the number of voters is something the EC always does with great importance.

EC said that many different activities have been arranged this year in celebration of National Voters' Day, which includes special interviews from commission members regarding National Voters' Day, a special podcast being held at 2:30 pm by PSM and on the EC's social media.

EC also said that the podcast will discuss why National Voters' Day is celebrated, its importance, and how important voting is, voters rights and responsibilities as a way to raise awareness.

The EC stated that they will provide important information to the public regarding the day, statistics regarding National Voters' Day and video clips on their social media.
