The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) began investigating the case of a group of students participating in an ongoing cadet camp at Addu Feydhoo School getting food poisoned.

In a post on social media, HRCM said that students participating in the Addu Basic Cadet Camp getting food poisoned, with some children falling seriously ill and having to be hospitalized, is a matter of great concern for the commission, and that it is monitoring the issue.

HRCM called on relevant authorities to investigate how this occurred as a very serious matter and to shape things in a manner that prevents such incidents from recurring.

"We wish a speedy recovery to all individuals receiving treatment in this incident," HRCM said.

A senior official with knowledge of the incident told "Mihaaru News" that a total of 24 students are receiving treatment due to food poisoning. That includes 12 children admitted and receiving treatment at Feydhoo Health Center and 12 children at Maradhoo Health Center.

"Stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea issues have been noted among those children. They are currently under observation," the official said.

Although they are being treated under admission, it is not yet known what caused the children to be food poisoned. Information regarding the party that supplied meals to the camp was also not clear.

Although this round of cadet camps concluded yesterday at some schools, it is being conducted for three days at most schools. The final day of the camp is August 25.
