Abdul Azeez Jamal Aboobakur nominated as Information Commissioner

The current Information Commissioner, Ahmed Ahid, was appointed on September 6, 2021. His five year term will expire on September 6 this year.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has nominated Abdul Azeez Jamal Aboobakur for appointment as Information Commissioner.

The President's letter seeking parliamentary approval for Abdul Azeez's appointment was read in Parliament today and referred to the Independent Institutions Committee for consideration.

However, the number of applicants for the position has not been disclosed.

Abdul Azeez, who currently serves as a State Minister at the Ministry of Heritage, was the first Information Commissioner appointed under the Right to Information Act. His previous term ended on July 22, 2019.

He has also served as the MP for Maavah constituency and worked at the Dhivehi Language Academy, where he was involved in writing several books on the Dhivehi language.

The Office of the Information Commissioner was established on July 13, 2014, under the Right to Information Act.
