An MoU was signed today between the National Drug Agency (NDA) and China's Yunnan University to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) and data science to modernize the treatment system for saving individuals from the plague of drugs as well as mental health services.
The Home Ministry's website stated that Home Minister Ali Ihusaan, senior NDA officials, and delegates from the Chinese delegation attended the special ceremony held for the occasion.
On behalf of the NDA, the agreement was signed by the agency's Board Chairperson, Ahmed Siddiq. Representing Yunnan University, it was signed by Professor Cai Li, Vice Dean of the School of Software and Artificial Intelligence.

According to the Ministry, the main objective of the MoU is to utilize modern technology and AI to find solutions to challenges faced in the treatment sector, conduct research in the field, and provide technical assistance.
The Ministry stated that providing specialized training to NDA staff to build their capacity is also an important component of the agreement, with practical operations of the project set to be carried out by the NDA.
Deputy Director General of NDA, Abdulla Faseeh, stated that going forward, work will primarily focus on identifying options most suited and friendly to the Maldivian environment, and further strengthening NDA's services using AI.

Highlighting that talking about and sharing matters related to mental health is often difficult and challenging for people, Faseeh stated that assessments via AI and steps to further expand services could be identified to minimize such challenges as much as possible.
Faseeh added that the MoU will provide international-level training and experience for NDA staff, alongside bringing significant advancements to the realm of providing treatment to recover from the impact of drugs in the Maldives.
