An individual who failed to provide child support has been imprisoned, and their photograph was published by the N. Landhoo Magistrate Court.

Landhoo Court sentenced Ahmed Anwar of Happynight, K. Kaashidhoo, to two months in prison. The court stated that his details were published following the sentence pursuant to the Family Regulations.

Anwar was jailed as an enforcement measure in the case.

The Family Court decided to disclose the names of individuals who fail to pay child support in the year 2018. However, publishing the details of non-custodial parents who fail to provide child support was first initiated towards the end of 2024 by the Lh. Hinnavaru Magistrate Court.

Since then, several courts have been publishing the identities of those who do not pay child support. Last year, the Family Court and the HDh. Kulhudhuffushi Magistrate Court also publicized the information of such individuals.

Courts consider those who do not provide child support as directed by a judgment to be defaulters of proven support. Publicly announcing the identities of such persons is permitted under the Family Regulations.

Under current child support collection regulations, the amount awarded is MVR 2,000 per month if there is only one child, and at a rate of MVR 1,000 per child per month if there is more than one child. However, the regulations stipulate that if the child's father possesses financial capability, or if additional expenses are required for the child, higher amounts can be awarded.
