A small aircraft has crashed in Spain, seriously injuring the Maldivian pilot student and their instructor.

Spanish newspaper La Rioja reported that the plane crashed near Viara, Navarre, with the two individuals who were piloting it sustaining injuries and are currently being treated at a hospital.

The Maldivian student suffered head trauma, and broke their ankle and leg, with the Portuguese flight instructor suffering head trauma and neck injuries, as per the news report.

There are currently no further details regarding the Maldivian student.

The plane crashed in a field area at Ulagosa from 300 feet, reported the news.

The plane that crashed is a Tecnam 2006 two-engine model that was being used by FlyBy Aviation Academy, which teaches Touch and Go training at Agoncillo Airport.

The 26-year -old Portuguese instructor has more than 700 hours of flight experience, with the Maldivian student being a 27-year-old who is in the final stage of multi-engine training.

Other news media have reported that the first phase of the investigation shows that the accident may have occurred due to a bird flying into the engine of the plane or because of a mechanical issue. The report reads that they sustained their injuries due to them attempting to conduct an emergency landing at the agricultural field.

The Spanish Aviation Safety Agency (Agencia Estatal de Seguridad Aérea: AESA) is conducting the investigation, with an accident having occurred four months ago from the same academy, when a plane experienced landing gear issues, stated the report.
