The former commander of Maldives Police Service’s Special Operations unit, Hussain Saif, along with another police officer were arrested late Thursday.

He was arrested at this residence in capital Male, where the police had first conducted a raid. Saif appeared calm as he was taken away in a police vehicle.

Mihaaru understands that Saif was taken under arrest over alleged attempts to incite disorder amongst the police force in connection with the Supreme Court’s ruling February 1 to release political prisoners and reinstate unseated legislators.

The police have confirmed that another officer was also taken into custody. They stated that the arrests were made in connection with ongoing investigations but did not disclose further details.

In the wake of the top court’s shock ruling, Saif was appointed as the SO Commander by the then Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Areef. Saif was later removed from the post.
