Four people have been provided with temporary shelter after a fire broke out in a seventh-floor apartment in Fahivai last night.  

Police said the fire was reported at around 8.40pm in an apartment on Bodurasgefaanu Magu. Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Fire and Rescue personnel responded to the scene and extinguished the fire by 9.25pm.

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said the fire started in the living room of the three-bedroom apartment and caused significant damage to the room.

Three women and a man living in the apartment have been provided with temporary accommodation and food for five days, NDMA said.

Smoke spread to some other apartments in the building, but no significant damage was reported, according to the authority.

No residents were injured in the fire. However, a police officer assisting at the scene suffered a cut to his arm while breaking the glass of a terrace door and was treated at ADK Hospital. He was not seriously injured.

NDMA said it is providing humanitarian assistance to those affected by the fire.

Police are investigating the cause of the incident.
