The Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (MMBC) stated yesterday that news dissemination should prioritize human dignity and the community's interests.

As per a press release from the MMBC, when the media provides information to the public regarding events and issues that occur in society, and especially when it comes to reporting on children, parents and those in vulnerable situations, MMBC urges special attention be paid to such matters.

MMBC said that content should be published in such a way it does not infringe on anyone's honor and dignity, and any sort of information that can identify especially children and those in vulnerable situations should be shared based upon the Constitution, the law and information shared by official administrations.

MMBC went on to say that as domestic disputes and issues related to mental health are delicate matters, any action in reporting such matters should be based in such a way it does not cause any sort of psychological or social distress to anyone.

Instead of "judging" the issues of those who are more vulnerable on social media, MMBC's press release reads that sharing the correct and relevant information shared by the relevant parties and administrations within legal boundaries is in everyone's best interest.

MMBC further stated that they would like to remind everyone who works in media to conduct themselves as per the established laws, regulations and disciplinary code in a responsible manner.

MMBC's press release was published in a time where the public has been debating about the action taken regarding a newborn child who had been taken into state care.

The mother of the child raised questions and expressed concern on social media after the child was taken into state care. The 25-year-old mother stated that her child was taken into state care citing her mental health issues and a disability in her hand as reasons. She also stated that the child was taken on the third day after birth against the mother's wishes.

In a statement issued regarding the matter, the Ministry of Health, Family and Social Assistance stated that the child taken into state care upon birth was handled in accordance with the law, and that a child is taken into state care only in situations where protection cannot be ensured by the family.

The Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) is currently investigating the case.
