President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has asked the public to not foster civil unrest and to not be people who inflict vulnerability upon the country and its citizens.
President Muizzu stated on a social media post in wishing the nation on National Day that memories from 467 years ago are remembered on National Day.
He also said he is reminded of the heroes who fought to rid the nation of the Portuguese colonizing power.
The President went on to say that the truth that was seen every time Maldives fell to foreign powers is the betrayal of those who were selfish and had ill will towards the country.
"Let us become the type of people who will uphold the nation's sovereignty and independence, and who will prevent civil unrest that may bring about vulnerability," said the President.
In celebration of National Day, President Muizzu said that what needs to be done first is to uphold the theme of putting the country first, and called on all citizens to uphold the spirit of patriotism.
President Muizzu's family attended the flag raising ceremony held at the Republic Square this morning.
This year's official National Day ceremony will be held at HA. Utheemu on Saturday morning.
National Day is celebrated every year in Maldives on the 1st of Rabi'ul Awwal, marking the day Siri Savadheetha Maha Radhun, Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu al-Auzam, freed Maldives from the Portuguese occupation.
