After a person who uses a wheelchair due to a disability was refused entry to two mosques in the Malé region presented their complaint along with video evidence to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the President stated that he would resolve the issue.

A person who met with the President during his program to meet with individual citizens told him that when attempting to enter the Salahuddin Mosque on Alikilegefaanu Magu in a wheelchair, they were told they would not be allowed inside, and the door was shut very rudely. The person explained to President Muizzu that those who acted this way at the mosque cited concern that the mosque might get dirty as their excuse.

"... Then I asked, 'Can't I be seated at the side near the door, and couldn't you clean it up later?' Even when I said that, they said, 'You can't be let in; wheelchair users can never be let into this mosque in any era,'" the person, named Faiz, told the President.

According to Faiz, he was treated the exact same way at a mosque in Hulhumalé as well. Consequently, he now performs all his prayers at home.

"I no longer go to the mosque, since the mosque shut its doors on me," he said.

The President stated that it was a very sad matter and that he would work to resolve it.

"I will work on what you mentioned to see if a good way forward can be achieved, you know. God willing, it will be rectified," the President said.

Among other difficulties experienced in a wheelchair, Faiz also highlighted as challenges the difficulty of boarding buses in the Malé region and the quality of wheelchairs issued with NSPA assistance not being very good.

President Muizzu stated that Faiz highlighted important matters and that he would work to resolve those issues.
