The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has appointed two applicants as judges to the Civil Court and three applicants as judges to the Criminal Court, with them having taken their oaths today.

The oath-taking ceremony was held this morning at the Supreme Court, with the judges having taken their oaths of office and given their appointment letters as well.

Of those who applied for the post of judge for the Civil Court which was announced on 21st July, those who were appointed after their interviews were:

From 30th October 2025, Nishath served as the Chief Magistrate of the GA. Kanduhulhudhoo Magistrate Court. He has a Bachelors of Law and a Masters of Law from Maldives National University (MNU).

Nishath, who has served more than 15 years in judiciary positions, has previously served as Deputy State Attorney at the Attorney General's Office, Investigation Officer, Legal Officer and Senior Legal Officer at the Anti-Corruption Commission, and as the General Counsel and Secretary General at the Bar Council of the Maldives.

Azeema holds a Bachelors of Sharia and Law from MNU and a Masters of Law from the University of Birmingham. She previously served as the Legal Officer and Deputy Director of Legal Affairs at the Parliament from 27th August 2014 until 28th February 2021.

Former Chief Magistrate of the Kaafu Atoll Judicial Constituency Mohamed Raghib Ahmed was one of the 42 applicants who applied for the position of judge in the Civil Court which was announced in June. Due to complaints against him however, it was decided that he would not be appointed.

He was removed as a magistrate seven years ago after facing allegations including sexual harassment, altering sentences, discrimination against staff, maintaining close relationships with some complainants, engaging in political activities and abusing his official powers.

The three appointees for the Criminal Court are:

Sulaiman served as the Chief Magistrate for the Hinnavaru Magistrate Court and as the Chief Magistrate for the Kurendhoo Magistrate Court, and has served in the judicial sector for more than 12 years. Sulaiman has a Bachelor of Sharia and Law from the College of Islamic Studies.

Thaufeeq applied as a judge after serving as an Assistant Public Prosecutor at the Prosecutor General's Office, and has also served as Senior Public Prosecutor. Thaufeeq has a Bachelor of Law from Maldives College of Higher Education and a Masters of Comparative Law from International Islamic University Malaysia. He has been in the judicial sector for more than 18 years, and has also held the position of Assistant State Attorney at the Attorney General's Office.

Abdulla has a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of LLB from the Karnataka State Law University. He has served in the judicial sector for more than 8 years and has served as a Senior Public Prosecutor at the Prosecutor General's Office since 2017.
