Galolhu North MP Mohamed Ibrahim has asked Housing Development Corporation (HDC) when the mechanical parking systems installed in Hulhumale' will be opened for public use, saying the facilities have become a waste.

Ten mechanical parking systems were installed at eight locations in Hulhumale' seven years ago.

In a letter to HDC Managing Director Brigadier (Retired) Ali Zuhair, MP Mohamed said the systems can accommodate 300 vehicles, but have never been opened to the public.

"According to the figures, if these 300 parking spaces were rented at a rate of just MVR 100 per day from 2019, the state would have earned more than MVR 83 million in revenue to date," he said.

MP Mohamed said one of the parking systems, which appears to remain in relatively good condition, is currently installed on vacant land in front of Ocean Front Residence.

MP Mohamed requested information from HDC on the mechanical parking systems, as the corporation is responsible for maintaining Hulhumale'.

He asked the corporation to answer three questions, including what steps have been taken to make the parking systems available to the public.

He also asked which institution would be responsible for the opportunity cost resulting from the systems remaining unused and requested a specific date for when HDC or another government agency would begin operating them.

Mechanical parking systems were installed in Male' and Hulhumale' during the administration of former president Abdulla Yameen. Many of the systems have since deteriorated and rusted due to prolonged disuse.
