The huge piles of waste near the Fahi Flats in Hulhumale' Phase 2 are being removed, with 1,260 tonnes of waste cleared as of now. 

Huge piles of trash was disposed in the empty land plot in front of Fahi Flat towers Dhoadhi 10 and 11, most of which were empty cardboard boxes and old furniture disposed from households. 

Housing Development Corporation (HDC) began clearing the area last Saturday. HDC said today that 1,260 tonnes of waste was cleared from this area alone.

HDC has appealed for public cooperation in maintaining cleanliness and keeping the area free of trash. 

The cleanup was part of HDC's 'Madhirin Rakka' campaign, which aims to clear mosquito breeding grounds in Hulhumale'. Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC), Police and WAMCO are collaborating with HDC in this campaign. 

Residents moved in to the newly built Fahi Flats from September last year. Since then, the area has faced an escalating issue of waste being disposed in public areas. 

FDC has previously said that they have spent MVR 13.5 million over the past eight months on clearing waste from the Fahi Flats area. During this period, 5040 tonnes of waste were cleared.

FDC said that such a high cost had gone towards waste disposal due to the public irresponsibly leaving waste in public spaces. They said that failure on the part of Fahi Flat residents to abide by waste disposal regulations had resulted in incurring high expenses through the corporation and the State budget.
