Regarding the audit report into the corruption within Fenaka Corporation and its contents, Parliament Majority Leader Ibrahim Falaah has stated that he had difficulty reading the report as was left "in tears".
While speaking during today's Parliament sitting in regards to the Public Accounts Committee's report after the committee had researched the Auditor General's report about the financial state and acquisition of goods and services from Fenaka Corporation, Falaah said that he tears up when he starts reading the report. And because of that, he said he may be unable to read the report at length.
"Honorable Speaker, I tear up when I begin reading the report. I do not think I can read the report at length. I keep tearing up. Because this is nothing but theft," said the Inguraidhoo Constituency MP.
Fenaka's audit report details cases of corruption regarding the corporation's efforts in acquiring goods and services during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government. One of the cases saw Fenaka's Managing Director at the time Ahmed Saeed be sentenced to prison.
Falaah said at the time, the Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer called on the current Economic Minister to a debate. He also said that during MDP's government, former President Mohamed Nasheed had criticized Ameer during his time as the Speaker of Parliament and after he left the position as well.
"When Ameer would submit the state budget, President Nasheed would say every time to Ameer that he is sending a receipt of theft," said Falaah.
According to Falaah, it saddens him to see that Nasheed had made Ameer a close ally. He went on to say that while Nasheed has been calling Ameer a talented economist, the things that Ameer has done is clearly visible in the report.
"This is not something worthy of punishing Fenaka MD Saeed alone. There were so many people who were involved. This is a saddening and embarrassing matter," said Falaah.
Falaah stated that he does not want to put anyone in prison and that Maldivian citizens need to form their own opinions regarding the matter.
