Former Presidents Mohamed Nasheed and Abdulla Yameen have decided to travel to GDh. Thinadhoo to mark 60 years since the island was repopulated for a second time.
Mayor of the city, Saudh Ali, stated that invitations were extended to all former presidents to mark "Aabaadhee 60" (Population 60). Among them, he stated that Nasheed and Yameen have given assurances that they will travel to Thinadhoo.
Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will not be traveling to the island as he is recovering from surgery.
Thinadhoo was depopulated and its residents evacuated on February 4, 1962, under the orders of former President Ibrahim Nasir to control the "Suvadive Movement" formed by three southern atolls. However, Thinadhoo was re-established as an inhabited island and people began moving back four years later, on August 22, 1966.
Back then President Yameen traveled to Thinadhoo for the ceremony held in 2016 to mark 50 years since that day.
Saudh stated that numerous activities have been scheduled to mark 60 years since re-population.
