The Male' City Council has passed a resolution to handover the development of the Male' City Wet Market project to the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources, with it to be handed back to the council after the project is done.
The resolution was passed during today's council meeting.
11 out of 16 council members who attended the meeting voted in favor of the resolution.
West Maafannu Constituency Councilor Mohamed Rilwan Ali, West Henveiru Constituency Councilor Fathimath Sahula, North Maafannu Constituency Councilor Hussain Furushan, North Machangoalhi Constituency Councilor Khadeeja Mohamed and Central Machangoalhi Councilor Hawwa Shifana did not cast their votes for the resolution.
Regarding the resolution, Male' City Mayor Adam Azim stated the current Fish Market is not the best place for the sale of fish and that there are questions regarding safety at the market.
And so, the mayor said finishing the development of the Fish Market as soon as possible is a request from Male' residents.
According to the resolution, the Malé Wet Market Complex is to be built on the 17,558 square foot site where the Local Market currently stands. The resolution requires the project to be completed within two and a half years, after which it is to be handed over to the council along with the building's blueprints. The resolution also requires that no part of the plot can be handed over to another party.
The resolution further states that the project is to move forward within the boundaries of the law, along with practical work on the project to only begin after a temporary market that can house the stalls that need to be vacated from the Local Market for the development of the new Local Market is built.
The mayor went on to say that the Wet Market issue has been audited separately, with the findings having been submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in December 2025.
While the basement of the Malé Wet Market Complex is meant for parking, the ground floor is being built as the fish market. The first three floors will have the fruit and vegetable market, and the fourth floor will have a food court.
