The Male' City Council has announced that they are seeking a company that can build a temporary market that can house the stalls that need to be vacated from the Local Market for the development of the new Local Market.

As per the Male' City Council's announcement, the bidding window has now been opened.

The city council stated that an information session for the bid submission will be held on Thursday at 10:00 am at the city council's meeting room, and that quotation submission will be held on 23rd August at 11:00 am at the city council.

According to the council, they will not accept estimates from companies that do not attend the information session and those who are late in submitting their estimates.

The city council said that only Maldivian companies, partnerships, and local investments and businesses that have been permitted can only submit their estimates.

The government awarded a contract to TrustEng Maldives Private Limited in March 2026 for MVR 127 million to build a modern new market on the land where the Malé Local Market is currently located.

Under this project, a six-story Wet Market Complex will be built. While the basement is dedicated to parking, the ground floor will house the fish market. The first three floors are dedicated to the vegetable market, while the fourth floor will operate a food court.

Even though the government requested the Male' City Council to provide plots to move forward with the project, the council stated that the project had already been awarded to another company.

And so, the Local Market development project is currently at a standstill.
