Authorities have cleared over 670 tonnes of waste from the huge heap of trash thrown near the Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) flats in Hulhumale' Phase 2.
Large piles of trash fill the empty plot of land in front of Dhoadhi 10 and 11 towers, most of which are cardboard boxes and old furniture.
Under Housing Development Corporation (HDC)'s 'Madhirin Rakkaa' programme, which aims to eradicate mosquito breeding grounds in Hulhumale', authorities aimed to clear this trash near Fahi Flats yesterday. HDC staff were joined by representatives from FDC, Police, WAMCO and MOPA in the efforts.
HDC's Head of Marketing and Public Relations Malsha Shareed said in a post on X that 670 tonnes of waste had been cleared from the area yesterday.
She said that clean up efforts are not yet complete, with teams active in the area today as well. She said that HDC aims to complete clearing the area of waste today.
Residents moved in to the newly built Fahi Flats from September last year. Since then, the issue of waste being left in the surrounding area has persisted.
FDC has earlier said that they have spent MVR 13.5 million over the past eight months on clearing waste from the area. During this time, 5040 tonnes of waste had been cleared.
FDC said that such a high cost had gone towards waste disposal due to the public irresponsibly leaving waste in public spaces. They said that failure on the part of Fahi Flat residents to abide by waste disposal regulations had resulted in incurring high expenses through the corporation and the State budget.
