A letter has been sent to Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusaan questioning the state of the Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Center in K. Himmafushi.

In the letter submitted by North Galolhu Constituency MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu), it requests information regarding complaints from those who are being treated at the center and the families of those being treated about the current state of the center and its operations.

The letter highlights that relevant parties have expressed that the center has systematic issues, about the safety of those being treated, human dignity and concerns about the efforts being conducted to reintegrate patients back into society.

Ibrahim raised questions about the truth regarding rumors that the center does not have a clean environment required to house patients, whether there is an appropriate amount of councilors and medical staff and what the efforts are in improving the state of the center.

Questions about the quality of food being given to patients, and the efforts in improving the state of the bathrooms and bedrooms were also asked.

Offering treatment built upon the scientific evidence surrounding the protection of human sanctity is a right as is written in the Maldives Drugs Act and the International Human Rights law, and straying from them will result in treatment results being void and drug relapse, as was written in the letter.

Ibrahim's letter requested the information be handed over in a short period of time as the information is related to public interests.

Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Mohamed Rasheed stated in January that the state of the treatment system for those who use drugs had fallen "into a state the public has never seen before".

He said that the National Drug Agency (NDA) does not have the required number of staff, that there is a lack of mental health specialists, the state of the treatment center is not good and that treatment centers do not have the capacity to meet the demand.

Minister Ihusaan said in June 2026 that a project to develop the Himmafushi Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Center would be announced. At the time, Ihusaan said that the center would be developed to accommodate patients and treat them simultaneously, with the project to finish within 18 months. The minister also said the center would be made into a place that falls in line with international standards.
