Men accounted for 61 percent of all deaths recorded in the Maldives last year, according to figures from the Maldives Bureau of Statistics.

The "Births and Deaths in Maldives" report, compiled in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, shows that 1,398 people died in the country last year. Of these, 858 deaths, or 61.4 percent, were male.

The majority of deaths occurred among people aged 65 and above, for both men and women. The second-highest number of deaths was recorded among those aged 18 to 64.

Among people in the 18-64 age group, 320 men and 131 women died last year.

The statistics show that men recorded higher deaths across all age groups.

More than half of all deaths occurred in Male', while Haa Dhaalu Atoll recorded the second-highest number of deaths.

In comparison, the Maldives recorded 5,625 births last year alongside more than 1,300 deaths.
