Local Government Authority (LGA) CEO Mohamed Nimal has announced that he will be running as a candidate for the Vice President position of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC).
He made this announcement via a Facebook post, stating that he has decided to run as PNC's Vice President for the next five-year term.
He requested support and that people vote for him in the upcoming Vice President Election during PNC's congress in September.
Nimal said he has spent the majority of the previous term as the Vice President of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), and that during MDP's previous term, he was able to successfully complete many works even when facing many obstacles.
According to him, the words of encouragement he received from party members and many others is one of the reasons why he was able to move forward at the time.
"It makes me quite happy to have been able to work in my capacity as the Vice President of a party that is working to be elected to office while listening to what everyone has to say and as a team member," wrote Nimal in the Facebook post.
Nimal stated that the party's first congress was held when it was an opposition party, and now, the second congress being held as a ruling party brings him great joy.
Nimal said he believes this is the result of the hard work of all the party members who worked tirelessly.
He went on to say that he will offer any aid he and PNC can in order to bring peace, development and independence to Maldives, and toward President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's efforts in bringing Maldives back from the deep pit it has fallen into.
Nimal stated further that working together with PNC in order to win the 2028 Presidential Election for President Muizzu is the highest priority, and that he would not lie for political gain or in any other way and will maintain himself as such.
Along with Nimal, Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fitness Abdulla Rafiu, Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef, Central Maafannu Constituency MP Asma Rasheed, Nilandhoo Constituency MP Fathimath Saudha, Minister of Economic Development Transport & Trade Mohamed Saeed and Baarah Constituency MP Ibrahim Shujau will also be running as a candidate for the Vice President of PNC.
PNC has a total of seven Vice Presidents, with one of the positions being meant for the Vice President of Maldives while PNC is a ruling party. And so, one one the positions of Vice President of PNC will automatically be Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef.
PNC's congress will be held from 15th September to 18th September.
