City Council has decided to conduct a major operation to inspect food service establishments in Malé.

The motion to conduct this activity was presented during today's general meeting of the Malé City Council by Machangolhi central constituency councilor Hawwa Shifana.

Shifana stated that there are numerous eateries and hotels catering to foreigners located in the narrow lanes of Malé, which has generated many complaints from residents.

Therefore, she proposed conducting a massive operation in Malé, Vilimalé, and Hulhumalé to inspect all food service establishments in collaboration with the Health Protection Agency (HPA), the Police, and Immigration.

In this activity, HPA's role will be to inspect the hygiene standards of the food service establishments. The role of the Police will be to handle the security aspects of the operation. Meanwhile, Immigration's role will be to check whether the foreigners working in these places are legally employed.

Furthermore, Shifana proposed that ensuring and monitoring whether these agencies conduct this activity should be a responsibility of the Council.

She also mentioned that rather than doing this merely for the sake of it, she wants it to be an operation that yields concrete results.

Shifana's proposal was passed today with the unanimous vote of all councilors.
