Malé City Council has commenced work on formulating a special regulation for waste disposal by private entities in Malé.

The decision to establish a waste disposal regulation was made during today's official general meeting of the Malé City Council. This issue was presented to the council by Machangolhi South constituency councilor Farhaan Shafeeu.

Presenting the issue, he stated that as Malé City continues to develop, the waste generated by businesses is increasing; however, the absence of a robust regulation to govern waste disposal service providers is leading to numerous challenges. He also noted that this presents obstacles to maintaining the cleanliness of Malé.

Therefore, he proposed requiring private waste disposal service providers in Malé to register with the council and renew their registration annually. He also suggested establishing scheduled hours for waste disposal to prevent traffic congestion.

Additionally, the proposal recommends including strict safety standards in the regulation, requiring waste disposal vehicles to clearly display the company name and registration number. It was also proposed to mandate that the waste-carrying compartment be securely covered and maintained to prevent garbage from spilling onto the streets.

The City Council has also decided to take action against parties that violate the established regulation. In this regard, the councilor proposed measures such as suspending registration, revoking licenses, and imposing fines in cases of non-compliance.

As waste management issues continue to escalate, this proposal, submitted amid growing disagreements between the City Council and WAMCO (Waste Management Corporation), which provides waste disposal services, was supported and endorsed by all councilors. Consequently, the decision was made to forward the matter to the council's Waste Management Committee to draft the regulation.
