The government has today contracted the development of a dedicated ice plant for reef fishing in AA. Ukulhas. 

This marks the first establishment of an ice plant dedicated exclusively to reef fishing. 

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu visited Ukulhas today to attend the SIDS-SAIs Symposium 2026. During his visit, a ceremony was held on the island where the ice plant project was contracted to Lhehi Construction and Trading Pvt Ltd. 

The President's Office said that the project involves the development of a 5-tonne ice plant. 

Ukulhas has a burgeoning local tourism industry. The ice plant will provide ice not just to reef fishing vessels, but also to cafe's and restaurants on the island. 

As per the contract signed today between the Fisheries Ministry and Lhehi Construction and Trading, the project is due to be completed within five months.
