STELCO Managing Director Dr. Ali Azwar has said plans have been made to build a 70 megawatt power station in Hulhumale', with the project to begin within the year.

In an interview he gave to PSM, Azwar said there are immediate upgrades that need to be done as the population in the Male' region is on the rise.

He said that every time there was a population increase, electricity had to be provided by bringing high speed generators.

And so, Azwar stated in preparation for the peak season in 2027 and 2028, the plan is to establish a medium speed power station in Hulhumale' Phase 2.

While work for a power station in Hulhumale' Phase 2 is set to begin next month, mid-2028 will see the completion of flats and handover of said flats, as per the government. This will see a population spike in the area.

According to Azwar, as the population in the Male' region is increasing, plans have been made to begin other electricity capacity expansion projects.

Work is currently being done to build a temporary 20 megawatt power station in Hulhumale' Phase 2.

A 50 megawatt power station is currently in use at Hulhumale' Phase 1.
