Customs has said that their inspection of imported goods to Maldives, passengers and vehicles and vessels is done as per the stipulations within the Customs Act. They also said their staff continue to uphold that responsibility.

Customs released a statement regarding a social media post, which included a picture of a female VIA arrival terminal Customs staff, where public dissatisfaction was shared, due to female passengers being inspected with in a certain way. The statement reads that Customs makes use of the established resources in inspecting goods brought in to Maldives, passengers and all manner of vehicles.

Additionally, while referring to information they receive and other findings, Customs said that if goods or a passenger needs to be searched physically, they would only do so according to the act. 

Customs went on to say that that is the way matters are enforced, in denying border access and stopping prohibited items from entering the country and ensuring public safety.

"And so, Customs continues to enforce these matters along the Maldivian border as per the Customs Act, rules and regulations," as was written in the statement.

In regards to legal responsibilities and efforts in upholding responsibilities, Customs has urged to not create doubt amongst the public, and to not act in such a way that it fosters a negative vision.
