The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will oversee the removal and management of debris from a safari boat that was wrecked off Kaafu Maafushi during severe weather last Friday.

EPA Chief Executive Hassan Mohamed told Mihaaru News that the agency would not investigate the incident itself, as the vessel ran aground on a reef due to adverse weather conditions.

"Our focus will be on the waste generated by the incident and how it is managed," he said.

Hassan said the agency would work with the Maafushi Council and the owners of the vessel to ensure the debris is properly removed and disposed of.

The safari boat was driven towards the outer harbour breakwater after its anchor came loose during rough weather. The vessel ran aground on the reef and was completely wrecked within about 10 minutes.The boat had been regularly anchored off Maafushi for tourist use.
