Minister of Housing Dr. Abdulla Muththalib stated that the work to establish water and sewerage services in 20 islands was awarded to Fenaka Corporation while they did not have the capacity to do so, and that is why the service has been delayed.

While answering a question from Kendhoo Constituency MP Mauroof Zakir during yesterday's Parliament sitting, the minister said when the previous government awarded the 20-island project to Fenaka, the company immediately sub-contracted the project to other companies.

"These include companies that have no experience. Advance payment was made as well, and after a certain point, as the current government was about to take office, the project had come to a standstill. So, we did not have a choice but to terminate it ourselves and award it to MWSC," said the minister.

Minister Muththalib went on to say that sub-contracting a project after awarding it to a state company is a guideline violation, but that all the work surrounding the projects awarded to Fenaka by the previous government had been sub-contracted.

"In truth, the reason why we have been delayed in offering this service is because of a fault on the part of the previous government," said Muththalib.

He went on to say that the current government is working to, as has been stated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, provide water and sewerage services to all islands by 2027.
