Prosecutor General's Office (PG Office) has withdrawn drug trafficking charges against a woman after another person arrested in the case admitted that the drugs found on her belonged to him.

The woman, from Haa Alifu Hoarafushi, was arrested in 2024 during a police operation in Laamu Atoll along with Ibrahim Imad from Laamu Maavah.

Police found 9.2 grams of dimorphine taped to a sanitary pad hidden inside the woman's underwear during a search.

Both individuals were charged with trafficking dimorphine, an offence that carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. The charges were filed at the Laamu Fonadhoo Magistrate's Court late last year.

PG Office has now withdrawn the charges against the woman, stating that Imad had taken responsibility for the drugs found in her possession and that the prosecution no longer wished to proceed against her.

The Magistrate's Court subsequently dismissed the case against the woman and returned the matter to the PG Office.

Imad was convicted after confessing to the offence. Following a plea agreement with the state, he received a reduced sentence of 12 years and six months in prison and was fined MVR 500,000 for trafficking dimorphine.
