Two ministries have signed an agreement to establish agroforestry farms in 10 islands to assure food safety in Maldives and to offer cooperation in the government's 5 Million Tree Project.
The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy wrote on the Sarukaaru website that the agreement was signed between the Environment Ministry and the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources.
Under the agreement, trees will be planted in 10 selected islands and to build agroforestry farms in the islands, as per the ministry.

Agroforestry is a sustainable system in using plots for planting trees, agricultural crops and maintaining livestock in a planned manner.
Because of this system, soil fertility will increase and soil erosion will be stopped, along with it greatly aiding in environmental protection. Additionally, agroforestry facilitates minerals in soil for different types of fruits, vegetables and planting of trees, and serves an agricultural method that will provide many benefits for farmers economically and in food safety.
The ministry stated the project is of special importance for President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's government's efforts in environmental protection and Maldives' economic prosperity.
The ministry also stated the main purpose of the project is to increase Maldives' agricultural output and to establish a sustainable system as a part of their effort to encourage overcoming seasonal changes.

As per the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources will supply 400,000 trees under the agreement to aid the 5 Million Tree Project. The ministry also added that under the project, they have signed agreements with island councils to build 10 nurseries in 10 islands.
As part of the government's 5 Million Tree Project, 1.8 million trees have been planted in various islands across Maldives. Many parties have pledged to plant a total of 5.8 million trees as well.
