Health Protection Agency (HPA) has urged people returning from Umrah to take precautions to reduce the risk of spreading illnesses.

In a social media post, the agency advised people who develop symptoms such as fever or cough after returning from Umrah to remain at home and monitor their condition. Those whose symptoms persist or worsen should seek medical attention.

The HPA also advised returning pilgrims to:

  • Avoid crowded places, particularly around children, older people and those with underlying health conditions.
  • Seek medical attention immediately if they develop a cough, difficulty breathing or chest pain within 14 days of returning from Umrah.
  • Inform the doctor that they have recently returned from Umrah.
  • Drink plenty of fluids and get adequate rest.
  • Use a cool compress to help reduce fever.
  • Avoid taking any medication other than paracetamol without consulting a doctor.
  • Cover the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
  • Dispose of used tissues safely.
  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water.
  • Wear a face mask while travelling and when performing Umrah.
