Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has urged mariners to exercise caution after a metal barge was reported drifting off Kaafu Himmafushi.

In a statement, the MNDF said the barge was located drifting about 3.5 nautical miles west of Himmafushi, between Himmafushi and Girifushi.

MNDF warned that the drifting barge poses a greater risk at night due to reduced visibility and advised vessels travelling in the area to exercise extra caution.

MNDF specifically urged those navigating the area after dark to remain vigilant.

The warning comes as severe weather continues to affect the Maldives.

Since Friday morning, rough seas and heavy rain have caused several marine incidents across the country. A floating bar off Kaafu Maafushi, Princess Lala, ran aground and was wrecked after its anchor came loose, while two Bangladeshi nationals remain missing after a landing craft capsized near Kaafu Gaafaru. The other eight people on board were rescued.
