Work has begun in cleaning up the parts of the safari ran aground off K. Maafushi began washing up into the lagoon and harbor.

Princess Laala (Maafushi Floating Bar) moored off Kaafu Maafushi ran aground and broke apart on Friday morning after its anchor gave way during severe weather.

The safari was swept towards the outer breakwater of the island's harbor after its anchor became dislodged. 

Maafushi Council Vice President Hussain Amil told Mihaaru News tonight that as debris from the safari were washing into the island harbor, residents, council personnel and institutions have come together to clean up the area.

"The safari was moored outside the harbor. However, large wooden pieces have been floating into the lagoon via the channel. We are working to clean up the many wooden debris that have come in, as the island's lagoon always has marine vessels traveling in and out," said the council vice president.

Only the deckhouse of the safari remained free from damage.

Amil said the council's priority is to clean up the wooden pieces floating into the lagoon.

There were six people on board at the time of the incident, and no injuries were reported, police said.

The incident occurred as the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) issued a Yellow Alert warning of severe weather, with winds of up to 50mph.

A source from Maafushi told Mihaaru News as the anchor gave way during the worst of the weather this morning, the vessel drifted into the harbor's outer sea wall before running aground on the reef, where it broke apart within about 10 minutes.

The safari is regularly anchored off Maafushi and operates as a floating bar for tourists visiting the island.
