Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) says its operations have returned to normal and regular waste collection services will resume from Saturday following last week's fire at the Thilafushi Regional Waste Management Facility.

In a statement issued, WAMCO said transfer stations in Male', Hulhumale' and Vilimale' will resume normal operations from Saturday.

The company said its waste collection service, including the collection of bulky waste, will also resume as usual.

WAMCO reminded customers that waste delivered to transfer stations must comply with the corporation's waste management guidelines, including requirements to separate construction and demolition (C&D) waste into two categories.

The fire at the Thilafushi Regional Waste Management Facility last week forced the closure of parts of the site, reducing the amount of waste WAMCO could accept.

The incident disrupted operations at transfer stations in Male', Hulhumale' and Vilimale', leading to reduced waste collection services and the temporary suspension of bulky waste disposal.

WAMCO Managing Director Mujuthaba Jaleel previously told Mihaaru News that waste transported to Thilafushi is sorted into separate categories, including organic waste, green waste and combustible waste.

According to Mujuthaba, the fire originated in a stockpile of separated combustible waste.

He also said on Friday that the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has temporarily allocated land to WAMCO to help address waste management challenges in the Male' region.
