Authorities have advised the public to exercise caution while travelling as strong winds, rough seas and heavy rain are expected across much of the Maldives today.
Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) said adverse weather conditions are expected to continue throughout the day and urged seafarers and travelers to take necessary precautions.
The Coast Guard issued the following safety advice:
- Inform the relevant authorities before undertaking sea travel.
- Ensure life jackets, communication equipment and bilge pumps are in good working condition.
- Do not overload cargo vessels and ensure vessels are properly licensed.
- Wear life jackets while travelling by sea and exercise extra caution.
- Diving and water sports operators should closely monitor weather conditions.
- Avoid travelling by sea while the Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has a Yellow or Orange Alert in effect.
Met Office has forecast winds of up to 50mph in some areas.
A Yellow Alert is in effect from Haa Alif Atoll to Meemu Atoll until 11:30am, with winds expected to range between 25mph and 30mph.
In a weather update issued on Thursday, the Met Office said the heaviest rainfall is expected today.
According to the agency, a low-pressure trough over the northern and south-eastern parts of the country has generated extensive rain clouds across the western Maldives.
Met Office has forecast unsettled weather across most parts of the country today, with adverse conditions expected to persist over the next two days.
