Princess Laala (Maafushi Floating Bar) moored off Kaafu Maafushi ran aground and broke apart on Friday morning after its anchor gave way during severe weather.

The safari, was swept towards the outer breakwater of the island's harbor after its anchor became dislodged.

A resident told Mihaaru News that the vessel drifted into the harbor's outer sea wall before running aground on the reef, where it broke apart within about 10 minutes.

Videos shared on social media show several people jumping into the sea after the vessel ran aground.

Police said they received a report at 10:15 am that a safari vessel anchored off Maafushi had broken free from its mooring and been pushed into the outer breakwater.

There were six people on board at the time of the incident, and no injuries were reported, police said.

The safari is regularly anchored off Maafushi and operates as a floating bar for tourists visiting the island.

The incident occurred as the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) issued a Yellow Alert warning of severe weather, with winds of up to 50mph.

According to the MET Office, a low-pressure trough over the northern and south-eastern parts of the country has generated extensive rain clouds across the western Maldives.

MET has forecast sporadic weather across most parts of the country today, with adverse conditions expected to continue over the next two days.
