The Home Ministry stated making expatriates aware of their rights before and after they come to Maldives and defining how cases can be filed is an important part of their efforts in reducing exploitation.

The slogan for World Day against Trafficking in Persons 2026 is “Trapped Behind the Scam”.

According to the ministry, this year's slogan shows that the crime of human trafficking was not something that was done in Maldives in the past and even so, it is a danger that keeps changing.

The ministry went on to say Maldives needs to strengthen its steps against making improper use of modern technology, social media and digital resources to offer false employment prospects in a time where unlawful acts of coercion are increasing in various corners of the globe.

The Home Ministry said putting a stop to human trafficking is a matter the government prioritizes.

The statement reads that as Maldives has a large number of expatriate workers and opened its society to such individuals, ensuring human dignity and legal protection is a must.

As per the ministry, they have conducted many efforts in strengthening against human trafficking and exploitation over the past two years.

This includes moving employment responsibilities under the Home Ministry and forming a roadmap named "Maldives Anti-Human Trafficking Strategic Plan 2026-2028".

As the plan concludes, the ministry said systemic issues will be solved and the entire system will be strengthened.

The ministry stated the government aims to cooperatively make Maldives a place where people can live without fear and with their dignity and sanctity intact.
