The Bangladesh government will donate 20,000 trees to the Maldives in support of the country's national tree-planting programme, Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman said today.
Dr Rahman, who is in the Maldives to attend celebrations marking the country's 61st Independence Day, made the announcement during a tree-planting ceremony at Lonuziyaaraiy Park.
As a symbolic gesture of the close friendship between the two countries, Dr Rahman planted 10 trees at the ceremony.
Speaking at the event, he said the additional 20,000 trees would support President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's initiative to plant 5 million trees nationwide.
The donation symbolizes the strong ties between the Maldives and Bangladesh, as well as their shared commitment to environmental protection and tackling the impacts of climate change, he said.
Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam, and Environment Minister Ali Shareef thanked the Bangladesh government for the donation.
Both ministers said the contribution reflects the long-standing relationship between the two countries and their shared commitment to advancing sustainable environmental protection and climate action.
